Diesel Engine: Who Invented, Types, Application to Know

A diesel engine is a device that is an intermittent-combustion piston-cylinder. This device was named after Rudolf Diesel, who invented this useful device.

In 1885, this French inventor set up his first shop in Paris to develop a compression ignition engine. The first prototype of this diesel engine was built in the year 1893. However, in 1897, Diesel developed successful results.

 In this device, fuel ignition is caused by air’s elevated temperature in the cylinder because of mechanical compression.

Hence, a diesel engine is also known as a CI or compression-ignition engine. It can operate on either a four-stroke or a two-stroke cycle. They were mainly popular as a more efficient device that was used instead of steam engines.

A diesel engine has the highest thermal efficiency or engine efficiency of any practical engine because it uses compression ignition rather than an ignition apparatus like a spark plug. A diesel engine actually works by converting the chemical energy of its fuel into mechanical energy.

There are mainly two categories of diesel engines depending on the basic number of strokes it needs to complete the combustion procedure, such as:

Two-stroke diesel engine.

Four-stroke diesel engine.

Two-Stroke Diesel Engine:

A diesel engine mainly uses compression ignition with the help of a two-stroke combustion cycle. It was invented in 1899 by Hugo Guldner. These types of engines were used for sea-going crafts. Many motorbikes used two-stroke engines as well. Two-stroke engines were also used in dirt bikes, boat motors, and jet skis.

Four-Stroke Diesel Engine:

These are the most common diesel engines that were used for motorized land transport, including vehicles like trucks, automobiles, light aircraft, diesel trains, and even motorcycles. Some examples of these engines can be found in lawnmowers, go-karts, etc. the four-stroke engines of trucks, cars, and motorbikes used gasoline as fuel.

Small Diesel Engine:

This is the most common diesel engine with power output values of less than 252 horsepower.

Medium Diesel Engines:

These engines have power capacities ranging from 252 to 1006 horsepower.

Large Diesel Engines:

Large engines are unique, with more than 750 kilowatts of power ratings. These diesel engines are used in locomotive, marine, and mechanical drive applications.

Petroleum engines:

In these diesel engines, petroleum is used as fuel.

Applications Of Diesel Engines

Diesel engines are used to perform different types of demanding construction work. There are various applications of diesel engines, such as:

Locomotives: A diesel engine can drive an electrical DC generator or an AC alternator-rectifier. Diesel locomotives use electricity to create motion.

Farming Equipment: A diesel engine helps farmers to run harvesters, pump water, use threshers, and also transport harvests.

In Cruise Ships And Cargoes: Cruise ships must use either diesel engines or diesel-electric for electric power propulsion. Diesel engines are also used to move forward large ships, like cargo.

In Construction Equipment: In construction sites, diesel engines are used to lift heavy machinery, as these engines can offer a performance that is full of fuel efficiency, power, low emissions, and also reliability. This engine uses equipment like pavers, cranes, excavators, bulldozers, and bucket loaders in construction sites.

In Trucks And Buses: Efficient diesel engines are also used to move heavy road vehicles, like buses and trucks, easily.
