However, the sea is about nine times saltier than normal freshwater. This makes it difficult for humans and other animals to drink from it.
Why Is The Sea Water Salty?
The ocean is salty because it contains dissolved salts, such as magnesium, calcium, and potassium, that come from rivers and from the erosion of rocks and minerals on land.
Over time, ocean water evaporates and leaves behind these salts, making the water increasingly salty. This process is called salinization and continues until the salt concentration in the ocean becomes too high for more salt to dissolve.
