10+ Best Hedgehog Activities for Your Little Onesย

Hedgehogs ๐Ÿฆ” are fascinating creatures, and I always wanted to keep a hedgehog as a pet ๐Ÿ˜ when I was young.

Though these little ones have spines on them, it doesn’t prevent them from being the favorites โค๏ธ of kids all around the globe.

My son is fascinated by the fact that hedgehogs are more active at night, just like detectives๐Ÿ” setting out on an adventure in the dark while the world is asleep.

There are several species ๐Ÿคฉ of hedgehogs all around the world, but all of them are equally cute and adorable.

I love to incorporate the theme of hedgehogs in the daily activities of my kids because this cute little creature helps greatly โœ…๏ธ in increasing their interest in the activity.

Hedgehog Activities for Kids

Read on to discover a few hedgehog-themed activities I love to engage in with kids because these activities are ideal for boosting the cognitive ๐Ÿง  and motor skills ๐Ÿ’ช of my little ones.

Hedgehog Mask and Ears

Aren’t the hedgehogs ๐Ÿฆ” extremely adorable?

My daughter loves them and always expresses her wish to be a hedgehog.

Therefore, I decided to make a hedgehog mask with cute ears for my kids in a simple and interesting way.

What you need-

Paper, crayons, paint ๐ŸŽจ, marker pen, glue, embellishments, thread ๐Ÿงต, and scissors.

  • Firstly, I draw the outline of a hedgehog’s ๐Ÿฆ” face on a piece of white chart paper using dotted lines and instruct my son and daughter to create a cutout by running a pair of scissors along the dotted lines ( a highly recommended โœ…๏ธ fine motor activity for little ones).
  • Following this step, I ask them to color and decorate the hedgehog using embellishments in any way they like.
  • I cut two slits in the cutout of the hedgehog’s face ( where the eyes ๐Ÿ‘€ are located) so that my kids can see through these slits when they wear the mask.
  • I fold paper in the form of a cone and attach it to the mask to create the nose. I just tie this hedgehog ๐Ÿฆ” mask around the heads of my kids using a thread.
  • To make the ears, I ask my little ones to prepare, paint, and decorate the cutouts of the ears of the hedgehog just in the same manner as they prepared the cutout of the face ๐Ÿฆ” of the hedgehog.
  • I attach the ears of the hedgehog to a paper strip using glue and make two slits on each end of this paper strip.
  • I pass a thread through these slits and tie it around the head of my children to form a headband with ears. They look like the most adorable hedgehogs ๐Ÿฆ” running around the house wearing this cute hedgehog-themed mask and headband.
  • You can also make a hedgehog’s face by joining two paper fans to create a circular paper fan and then decorate it using cutouts of ears, eyes, and a nose made out of a paper cone.

Pro Tipย

You can attach this hedgehog mask to one end of a cardboard roll or a paper cup, place the other end on the study table vertically, and use this setup as a pencil โœ๏ธ holder.

Important Note:

Kindly make sure your little hedgehog lovers do not hurt themselves while playing with a pair of scissors.

Hedgehog Stamp

Hedgehog stamps are one of the most adorable things for kids to play with, and my daughter loves them, too.

Therefore, I decided to make several kinds of hedgehog stamps for her.

What you need–ย

Apples ๐ŸŽ , potatoes ๐Ÿฅ”, styrofoam, paint ๐ŸŽจ, cutter, glue, dice, colorful papers of varying textures (such as sandpaper, glossy paper, chart paper, brown paper, kite paper, handmade textured paper, and glitter paper), marker pen, scissors โœ‚๏ธ, threads or rubber bands.

  • For this activity, firstly, I prepare hedgehog-shaped ๐Ÿฆ” cutouts from styrofoam sheets using a cutter.
  • Now, I draw one semi-circular outline (recommended radius- 2 centimeters) and a triangular outline (adjust the measurements according to the radius of the semi-circular outline) with dotted lines on the textured papers.
  • I instruct my kids to cut โœ‚๏ธ along the dotted outlines using a pair of scissors to create semi-circular and triangular cutouts. Not only learning how to handle a pair of scissors is an amazing motor activity for kids, but playing with different textured papers is a fantastic sensory exercise for children.
  • Now, I stick these cutouts on the styrofoam hedgehogs ๐Ÿฆ”(using the semi-circular piece for the body and triangular pieces for the face) and tie them to the palms of my kids using a rubber band or thread.
  • You can also attach strips of cardboard to create the spines if you find it difficult to cut out the outline of a hedgehog with spines from a styrofoam sheet.
  • They dip it in paint of diverse shades and press the hedgehog’s ๐Ÿฆ” impressions on white chart paper. They create an amazing hedgehog-themed painting with stamps of diverse textures.
  • You can also hang this white chart paper with the hedgehog’s outline on the wall for your little ones.
  • I ask them to roll a dice ๐ŸŽฒ and identify the number on the face of the dice facing upwards. Then, I instructed them to put the impressions of hedgehogs on the chart paper the same number of times.
  • Instead of styrofoam, you can also use potatoes ๐Ÿฅ” and apples ๐ŸŽ to create hedgehog stamps.

Important Note:

Kindly make sure your little ones do not hurt themselves while playing with a pair of scissors.

Hedgehog Collage Greeting Card

My kids love making a hedgehog-themed ๐Ÿฆ” greeting card for each other. They do so by making a collage or using crafty methods.

I ask my little hedgehog lovers to cut โœ‚๏ธ out and collect pictures of hedgehogs ๐Ÿฆ” from various newspapers, comics, and magazines. We stick all of them together to create an adorable collage of cute little hedgehogs on a greeting ๐Ÿ’Œ card.

My kids also like paper cutting โœ‚๏ธ activities. Therefore, they also make a whole hedgehog of paper (two-dimensional) in the form of a greeting card in the following ways.

  • They cut out a semi-circular piece to form the body of a hedgehog ๐Ÿฆ” and attach strips of brown paper to the circular end of the semi-circular piece to create the spines.
  • They use a triangular piece of paper to form the hedgehog’s face.
  • They use paint ๐ŸŽจ to create the eyes and nose and decorate it as they like. They stick this hedgehog on a rectangular greeting card. Sometimes, they create another similar piece of a hedgehog and attach the two pieces together at one end using tape (such that the two pieces can be separated from each other at the other end) to make a card.
  • I have several such adorable greeting cards ๐Ÿ’Œ gifted to me by my kids.

Important Note:

Kindly make sure your little ones do not hurt themselves while playing with a pair of scissors.

Counting The Spines

I have discovered a fantastic hedgehog-themed ๐Ÿฆ” counting ๐Ÿ”ข activity for my little hedgehog lovers. Read on to find out everything regarding this amazing hedgehog-themed activity.

What you need-ย

Paper( in various shades of brown), cutouts of hedgehogs ๐Ÿฆ”, marker pens, scissors, and double tape.

  • I help my little ones prepare cutouts of hedgehogs and mark them with numbers from 1 to 50.
  • I jumble up all the hedgehogs in a bowl and ask my little hedgehog lovers to segregate the cutouts carrying the even numbers in one bowl and the ones carrying the odd numbers in another.
  • I instruct my little hedgehog ๐Ÿฆ” lovers to count ๐Ÿ”ข the total number of hedgehogs in each bowl and then add up all the numbers written on each cutout of a hedgehog to find the total sum.
  • Sometimes, I write โœ๏ธ random alphabets on the cutouts ๐Ÿ”ก and ask my little hedgehog ๐Ÿฆ” lovers to arrange the hedgehogs together to form a word.
  • If your little hedgehog-lover is a toddler, you can teach them how to count using these hedgehogs. I just make a diagram or outline of a hedgehog ๐Ÿฆ” on white chart paper and cover the inner area of the outline with double-sided tape.
  • Now, I draw straight lines on brown paper with a marker and help my little one to use a pair of scissors โœ‚๏ธ and cut out strips of brown paper.
  • Now, I instruct them to assume that these strips are the spines of a hedgehog.
  • They have to pick up a hedgehog cutout carrying a certain number ๐Ÿ”ข from the bowl and put the same number of spines on the hedgehog drawn on the white chart paper by means of double tape.

This is an excellent counting activity for your little hedgehog lovers.

Important Note:

Kindly make sure your little hedgehog lovers do not hurt themselves while playing with a pair of scissors.

Hedgehog Craft Activities

Hedgehog ๐Ÿฆ” paintings ๐ŸŽจ and craft activities are quite loved by my little ones, and I just love to incorporate creative methods of painting hedgehogs into the daily activities of my hedgehog lovers ๐Ÿฆ” so that they are happy as well as busy all the time.

Here are a few ideas and recommended methods for making amazing hedgehog ๐Ÿฆ” paintings that my little hedgehog lovers happily engage in:

Leafy Hedgehog:

A nature scavenger hunt around the park is an excellent activity idea for kids. I ask my kids to take a basket ๐Ÿงบ and collect leaves ๐Ÿƒ in the shades of green and brown ๐Ÿ‚ from all around the park.

They also collect sticks and stones along with any other thing they might find interesting. I draw the outline of a hedgehog ๐Ÿฆ”on a piece of white chart paper, and we create a hedgehog by sticking all the things my little explorers have hunted down from the park.

We use brown ๐Ÿ‚ leaves to create the hedgehog’s body and green ๐Ÿƒ ones for the face. We glue the slender sticks to create the spines, whereas rocks are excellent supplies for creating the eyes and nose.

In fact, a pine cone decorated like a hedgehog is also quite popular with kids.

Egg Carton Hedgehog:

I just help my kids to paint ๐ŸŽจ egg carton with brown shades of paint, and we insert a stick on top of the carton to create the hedgehog’s ๐Ÿฆ” spiny back.

We also add a paper folded in the form of a cone to create the cute little nose of a hedgehog. You can use a paper cup ๐Ÿฅค instead of the egg carton, too.

Streamer Hedgehog:

In our household, we often utilize colorful streamers for decorations and also make an adorable ‘hedgehog ๐Ÿฆ” on the wall’ using it. This is an engaging hedgehog-themed activity for kids on several occasions and birthday ๐ŸŽ‚ parties.

I just drew the outline of a big hedgehog on a piece of white chart paper and covered the area lying inside the outline with double-sided tape. I hang it on the wall using thread and ask the little guests to put streamers of their choice on this outline of the hedgehog’s figure.

These streamers serve as colorful spines on the hedgehog’s ๐Ÿฆ” body. The little guests have a lot of fun doing it, and the end result is a spiny and colorful hedgehog ๐Ÿฆ” on the wall.

Fork Hedgehog:

I instruct my adorable hedgehog lovers through the process of dipping a fork’s backside in black and brown shades of paint ๐ŸŽจ and pressing its impression on paper in a particular fashion to create the hedgehog’s ๐Ÿฆ” body.

We create its eyes ๐Ÿ‘€, spines, and other parts using a paintbrush ๐Ÿ–Œ or by sticking beautiful embellishments or accessories.

Hand Painting:

I ask my little hedgehog lovers to place their palms in a tray carrying black and brown shades of paint ๐ŸŽจ and stamp its impression on a piece of paper around a center in a semi-circular path.

This entire impression creates the hedgehog’s picture and the impression of the fingers serving as spines on its back. We love to decorate it with eyes ๐Ÿ‘€ using embellishments.

This hedgehog-themed activity enhances the coordination of hands โœ‹๏ธ of my little ones and aids the child to ๐Ÿง  focus on a specific activity.

Rice, Grain, Cereal, or Pasta Hedgehog:

Playing with rice, grains, cereals, or pasta takes us back to my childhood days. Therefore, I discovered an excellent way to incorporate these things into an ideal sensory activity for my little hedgehog ๐Ÿฆ” lovers.

I put rice, grains, cereals, or pieces of pasta inside a ziplock bag and add black and brown shades of paint to it (if your little one is a fan of any animated hedgehog character, then you can add colors according to that character’s appearance).

I instruct my little hedgehog ๐Ÿฆ” lovers to shake the bag and keep it aside for the paint to dry up so that the pieces of pasta, grains, cereals, or rice are in our desired shades of color.

I draw the outline of an adorable hedgehog on a piece of white chart paper and guide my little hedgehog lovers to glue these grains of rice, cereals, or pieces of pasta on it using craft glue (an excellent and ideal โœ…๏ธ activity that helps to enhance the focus of a growing child).

Bubble Wrap Hedgehog:

Bubble wraps are the cutest ๐Ÿ˜ supplies to utilize for amazing craft activities. Therefore, we decided to create an adorable hedgehog ๐Ÿฆ” using it.

I just instruct my little hedgehog lovers to immerse a piece of bubble wrap (cut in the shape or outline of a hedgehog) in shades of black and brown and press its impression on paper.

You can also draw the outline of a hedgehog and stick pieces of bubble wrap dipped in brown shades of paint to make a bubbly hedgehog ๐Ÿฆ” painting.

Edible Hedgehogs

Hedgehog-themed delicacies, cookies ๐Ÿช, pieces of bread, and even ice creams are famous amongst all kids.

Food is every child’s favorite ๐Ÿ˜ around the globe, and when they receive delicacies decorated in the theme of their favorite animal, it makes them the happiest ๐Ÿคฉ bundle of joy to ever exist.

I have also tried making a few hedgehog-themed ๐Ÿฆ” delicacies for my little hedgehog lovers at home. I have mentioned a few of those delicacies here, and I hope ๐Ÿ˜‡ you will like them.

Hedgehog Cupcakes:

My daughter is in love with cupcakes ๐Ÿง, especially with the pretty icing on top of them. Therefore, I put her favorite cream in a piping bag and often guided her to create the face of a hedgehog on the cupcake.

Using a piping bag to create a pattern or a picture requires focus; therefore, this activity is suitable for enhancing the focus ๐Ÿง  and concentration of my little hedgehog lovers.

You can also teach your little ones how to create spines with the help of a piping bag on a cupcake, a slice of bread ๐Ÿž , a cute cookie, or a scoop of delicious ice cream.

Vegetable Hedgehog:

I love this hedgehog-themed ๐Ÿฆ” activity because it is an ideal way of encouraging little ones to eat green and nutritious vegetables and fruits.

I use slices of vegetables ๐Ÿซ‘ ๐Ÿฅฆ to create the body of a hedgehog by placing them in the form of two circles. I cut out two slices of strawberries ๐Ÿ“ to use them to create the hedgehog’s ears.

Two sliced olives are perfect to create the eyes, whereas chopped slender stick-like slices of a carrot ๐Ÿฅ• are excellent to create the spines.ย

Marshmallow Hedgehog:

For this activity, we just take a piece of marshmallow and draw funny hedgehogs on it using honey or whipping cream.

You can do the same with donuts ๐Ÿฉ , apple pies ๐Ÿฅง, or on a pretty birthday ๐ŸŽ‚ cake.

Hedgehog In The Tub

This hedgehog-themed sensory activity is a favorite ๐Ÿฆ” and a staple in everyone’s household.

Sensory activities have always played a significant role โœ…๏ธ in the overall development of a child; therefore, I never miss out on this amazing ๐Ÿ‘ activity.

What you need-ย

Flour, vegetable oil, hedgehog-themed accessories, tub, and everything related to hedgehogs.

  • I ask my tiny hedgehog ๐Ÿฆ” lovers to think and name any five things that remind them of hedgehogs.
  • I put those five things, along with the other hedgehog-themed accessories, in a plastic tub filled with a mixture of vegetable oil and flour.
  • I instruct my little ones to locate those items in the bag using their hands, thereby improving โœ…๏ธ their sensory skills.
