Today, we’re going to learn how to draw a budgerigar, or “budgie.”
These small, colorful parrots are great for practicing how to capture color, texture, and movement. Budgies have bright feathers and lively expressions, adding both beauty and personality to your artwork.
Drawing birds is rewarding because it challenges you to pay attention to details like feather texture, the shape of the beak, and the sparkle in their eyes. This helps improve your ability to bring your drawings to life.
So, grab your sketching tools and let’s bring these charming birds to life on paper. Ready to start drawing? Let’s go!
How to Draw a Budgerigar
Step: 1
Start by sketching a basic curve to shape the head and face of the budgerigar. Focus on the outline of the face and the back of the head.
Step: 2
Next, draw the budgerigar’s eye and beak. Position the eye at the front of the face using a small circle, and sketch a small, pointed shape right below it for the upper beak.
Step: 3
Draw a gentle, curved line from the back of the head downwards to form the neck. Keep the line smooth and not too long.
Step: 4
Extend the line from the neck to shape the bird’s upper body and back, using a wider curve to represent its body.
Step: 5
Add the wing outlines. Draw connected curves on the body to illustrate the layered feathers of the wing.
Step: 6
Sketch the rest of the body, including the underbelly and the lower back, connecting smoothly to where the tail will begin.
Step: 7
Sketch a slender, pointed tail extending from the lower back using elongated shapes for the feathers.
Step: 8
Go back to refine details on the wings, adding individual feathers and enhancing the texture on the body.
Step: 9
Draw the perch beneath the bird’s feet, ensuring it looks sturdy and appropriately sized.
Step: 10
Color your budgerigar drawing using vibrant greens, blues, and yellows. Ensure the eye, beak, and perch are distinctly colored to enhance the overall appearance.
