15+ Halloween Scavenger Hunt Ideas to Challenge Your Friends!

It’s that Time of The Year! It’s Halloween 🎃- the Spookiest Time to Ever Exist.

The reason I enjoy Halloween is that I create these incredibly spooky scavenger hunts for my children and their friends, and they look forward to it every single year. This is why I enjoy Halloween so much.

I am overjoyed to be able to share with you today some ideas for a scavenger hunt that is themed around Halloween 🦴 for your children as well. Playing these hunts is not only a lot of fun, but they are also instructive, informational, and spooky.

In order to avoid wasting too much time, I will not be babbling. There are a lot of options for the quest, so let’s dig right in and start exploring them.

Fun Fact: The concept that disguising oneself will confuse and fend off evil spirits is the origin of the tradition of wearing costumes on Halloween, which originated from this belief.

Halloween Scavenger Hunt Ideas for Your Kids

#safety first- Be sure that the costumes your kids wear do not restrict their mobility or visibility.

Spooky Scavenger Hunt

This first activity is absolutely the one I enjoy doing with my kids!

  • People are given a list of scary things to find in a certain area, like fake spiders, ghost cutouts, or witch hats.
  • They put on their brave faces and flashlights 🏮 to look for these scary things, crossing them off as they find them.
  • A Halloween treat is given to the first person to finish the list or the team with the most items found when the time is up.

Ghostly Hunt Adventure

As spooky as it can be, it is my favorite!

  • Kids go on an exciting quest to find ghostly figures that have been hidden all over the Halloween party venue.
  • Each ghost leaves a clue that leads to the next one, making the journey exciting and fun.
  • A scary prize will be given to the first child or team to figure out all the clues and find the last ghost.

Pumpkin Patch Hunt

  • Set up a small pumpkin patch with surprises hidden in the pumpkins. Kids look for certain pumpkins or find messages hidden in them.
  • The Pumpkin 🎃 Patch Hunt champion gets a pumpkin-themed prize and is the first person to find all the required pumpkins or solve the pumpkin puzzles.

Witchy Hunt Quest

You would agree with me that it’s time for your kids to put on their thinking caps and enjoy a fun witch-themed hunt quest!

  • Kids solve witch-themed puzzles or riddles to follow a witch’s magical trail.
  • With each right answer, they get closer to the big prize that is hidden 🫥 at the end of the quest.
  • The winner of the Witchy Hunt Quest is the first child or team to make it through all of the witches’ challenges and get to the end.

Creepy Crawl Hunt

Do you know what Halloween reminds me of? Creepy, crawling bugs and worms, and that’s where my inspiration for this hunt comes from.

  • Kiddos start looking for creepy-crawly things that are hidden all over the designated area.
  • Toy bugs, plastic spiders, and rubber snakes are some of the animals that kids collect.
  • They are careful not to get scared, though.
  • At the end of the hunt, a creepy-crawly prize goes to the child or team that found the most bugs.

Haunted Hide-and-Seek Hunt

My mom is actually the one who devised this when I was 8.

  • Have one child hide while dressed as a ghost or ghoul to make hide-and-seek more fun.
  • Other people in the game search for the hidden haunt with flashlights 🚨.
  • When they are found, they switch roles.
  • This scary version of the classic game hide-and-seek goes on until everyone has had a chance to play.
  • A scary prize is given to the child who comes up with the best places to hide.

Goblin Gathering Hunt

My son’s favorite activity! Let me take you through how this is done-

  • Kids play as goblin hunters whose job it is to find things that are related to goblins.
  • Put goblin masks, figurines, and other small things all over the play area. For each find, you get points.
  • In the end, the winner is the person 🧕🏾 or team with the most points.
  • By giving items different point values, you can make the goblin gathering quest more difficult and add a strategic element to it.

Mummy’s Mystery Hunt

Spooky and exciting- even though my daughter is too young for this- I am sure she will enjoy this when she grows up!

  • Make mummy bundles out of small prizes by wrapping them in layers of toilet paper.
  • Hide these bundles around the area, and when the kids find them, they can open them up to find a surprise inside.
  • As time ⏳ runs out, the game is won by the child or team that can open the most mummies.
  • To make the game more difficult, put clues on some mummies that lead to a hidden treasure.

To make the game more delicious, I have an idea: make yummy pigs in a blanket, call them a mummy, and call it a – HUNT!

Trick-or-Treat Trail Hunt

Turn the usual Halloween activity of trick-or-treating into a scavenger hunt.

  • Each set of clues leads kids to a different trick-or-treat station. They get candies 🍬 or small treats at each station.
  • A Halloween treat bag is given to the first person to finish the trail or the person who has the most treats at the end.

Trick-or-treating has been done for years, but this interactive, candy-filled adventure changes things up.

Monster Mash Hunt

I can’t tell you how excited your kids will be when you do this activity with them.

  • Put together a “monster mash” dance floor by cutting out or painting different monsters 👹.
  • When kids find one of these monsters, they make a dance move that looks like the monster.
  • Set up a panel of judges or let the people who are participating vote on which monster dance is the best.
  • A horrifyingly sweet prize is given to the kid whose monster dance moves are the most entertaining.

Pro Tip: You can play this hunt in a different way by giving kids a bowl of mashed potatoes and some scary-looking candies or veggies. Ask them to decorate it. The winner is whoever looks the scariest.

Jack-o’-Lantern Hunt

What’s a Halloween-themed activity without the classic jack-o’-lantern – don’t you agree with me?

  • Place small jack-o’-lanterns 🏮 around the area. Each one should have a clue or a small treat inside.

In the “Eerie Eyeball Expedition,” your kids go on an exciting search for strange eyeballs that have been hidden in a certain area.

  • Each eyeball 👀 has a tip written on it that leads to the next spot.
  • As people follow the trail, they have to solve scary puzzles and tasks to find more eyeballs.
  • The adventure ends with a final task or treasure, where the participants find out what the scary eyeballs are all about.
  • It’s a thrilling and interesting game hunt that combines mystery and Halloween fun for an unforgettable experience.

Haunted Hayride Heist

I love planning heists. I feel like I am a character from the Netflix series, ‘Monet Heist.’

A haunted hayride is taken by children 🧒, and as they make their way through terrifying sceneries and come face to face with friendly spirits, they are tasked with solving mysteries and seeking snacks that are dispersed along the creepy trail.

Pumpkin Party Prowl

This hunt consists of a merry tour through a colorful pumpkin 🎃 patch, during which guests attend a pumpkin party, participating in activities such as collecting sweets and solving riddles as the atmosphere is filled with the joyous atmosphere of dancing pumpkins and festive decorations.

Graveyard Guess Hunt

My favorite activity to do with my kids, and trust me, your kids will love this, too!

  • Use tombstone cutouts or markers, each of which stands for a mystery item, to make a makeshift cemetery.
  • Based on scary clues, the kids try to guess what’s hidden behind the tombstones.
